AI is not neutral and that is our worry
Have you ever wondered who decides what AI learns about you?
Most of us use AI every day without thinking twice. We ask questions, get recommendations, apply for jobs, use facial recognition, and interact with systems that quietly make decisions in the background.
We trust that these systems are fair.
But what if they are learning from a world that has not always been fair?
Imagine a young woman applying for a job, a student using an AI tool for learning, or a mother seeking healthcare information online. They may never see the code behind the technology, yet the way AI has been trained can influence the opportunities, information, and outcomes they receive.
This is one of the biggest concerns surrounding AI today.
Research has shown that some AI systems have associated women with words such as home, family, and children, while linking men with business, salary, and career. These patterns are not created intentionally. They are often inherited from the data used to train the systems.
And when you consider that women make up only around 30% of the global AI workforce, it raises an important question:
Whose voices are shaping the technologies that are shaping our future?
The good news is that the future is not written yet.
AI has the potential to help create a safer, fairer, and more inclusive world. But achieving that future requires diverse voices, different perspectives, and meaningful conversations about ethics, bias, and inclusion.
That is why the HerHCAI Project exists.
We are bringing together women, educators, researchers, industry professionals, policymakers, and allies to explore how we can build AI that puts people first. Not just technology that works, but technology that works fairly for everyone.
Over the coming weeks, we will be sharing events, discussions, training opportunities, and practical insights that help more people understand AI and contribute to its future.
Because the question is not whether AI will shape society.
The real question is whether all of us will have a voice in shaping AI.
