Congratulations on being selected to join the HerHCAI 5-week Digital Literacy and Human-Centred Artificial Intelligence course.

This page contains all the important information about the HerHCAI 5-Week HCAI Digital Literacy Course. You can use this page to catch up on course sessions, access learning materials, complete assessments, view important updates, and find other information relating to the course.

Participant Instructions and Code of Conduct

It is important that all participants read the Participant Instructions and Code of Conduct carefully. This provides important guidance on what is expected of you during the course, how to participate effectively, and how we can maintain a respectful, inclusive and supportive learning environment for everyone.

Important: Your session link changes each week.

Please note that the Microsoft Teams link is different for each week of the course. Make sure you look out for your HerHCAI email each week and use the joining link provided in that week’s email. Please do not rely on a previous week’s link.

Catch Up on Week 1

What is Artificial Intelligence, how does it learn, and how can we make sure it works with people rather than simply replacing them? In this introductory HerHCAI lecture, Dr Bola Omisade explores what AI means, how AI systems learn from human-labelled data, and some of the opportunities and concerns surrounding increasingly powerful AI systems. The session then introduces Human-Centred Artificial Intelligence (HCAI) as a different way of thinking about AI: starting with people, understanding their needs, experiences and perspectives, and asking an important question: Does this problem actually need an AI solution?

Catch Up on Week 2: Designing AI Systems People Trust

How can we design AI systems that people trust, feel confident using and see as collaborators rather than replacements?
In Week 2 of the HerHCAI 5-Week Course, Dr Bola Omisade explores how Human-Centred AI (HCAI) can help us design AI systems that put people at the centre of their development and use. Through real-world examples, including IBM Watson for Oncology and AI used to predict the spread of COVID-19, this session examines why technical accuracy alone is not enough to build trust. It highlights the importance of inclusive design, human oversight, interdisciplinary collaboration and involving people with diverse backgrounds and lived experiences.
The session also introduces the human–AI collaboration loop, exploring how co-design, continuous feedback and evaluation can help us develop responsible AI systems that meet people’s needs and enhance human capabilities.
Watch the Week 2 recording to catch up on the session or revisit the key concepts at your own pace.
